Ben Barba is expected to be handed a creative licence by coach Shane Flanagan this week as Cronulla are decimated by representative duties.

Despite being on a club-record 12-game NRL winning streak, the Sharks head into Sunday's clash against Penrith as outsiders due to Paul Gallen, Andrew Fifita, James Maloney, Jack Bird and Wade Graham missing.

With dominant playmaker Maloney away, Nu Brown is expected to come into the halves but halfback Chad Townsend said he expected fullback Barba to get his hands on the ball a lot more.
