James Maloney has emerged as NSW's in-form five-eighth over the opening seven rounds of the NRL, but Blues skipper Paul Gallen says his Cronulla teammate needs to do more to press his State of Origin chances.

Former NSW pivot Maloney has piloted the Sharks to four straight wins and equal second on the competition ladder in his first year in the Shire.

He played for the Blues in their losing 2013 Origin series but was dumped for 2014 and didn't earn a call up in 2015.
